David Mai, Psychologist (B.Sc.)

My name is David Mai. I am a Psychologist (B.Sc.) and offer freelance psychological counselling in Trier and Online.

I was born in Kaiserslautern, studied in Trier, and completed my Bachelor's degree in 2025. My studies were strongly rooted in scientific methods. I was particularly shaped by cognitive behavioural psychology, modern emotion regulation, and the question of how psychological insights can concretely help in everyday life.

Since 2023, I have been supporting people in individual sessions — initially on a voluntary basis, now with more than 400 hours of practical experience in psychological counselling.

Alongside my practice, I support people at a social services organisation in Trier through challenging life situations. The experience I have gained in stabilisation and practical psychological support flows directly into my work today.

During my studies, I chose philosophy as a minor, because it deepened my existential interest and helped me understand people not merely as systems, but as whole, searching beings.

What brought me here

I have always been drawn to the big questions of life — to what makes us human, what moves us, and what drives us. During my backpacking trip in Australia, it became clear that this is what I wanted to do professionally. That is where I decided to study psychology.

I enjoy spending time in nature — it is where I find stillness. I am an animal person and a dog lover, because dogs remind me of the lightness in life. And growth — in myself and in others — fulfils me and gives me the feeling that I am doing the right thing.

What drives me is a mix of curiosity, humility, and genuine passion for people — for their vulnerability, their strength, and their potential.

"He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how."

Nietzsche, quoted by Viktor Frankl

What I believe in

I believe in the strength and self-efficacy of people, and in the value of honest, respectful reflection to pave the way for genuine transformation. Every person goes through difficult phases, and I believe that psychological support should reach everyone who needs it.

We all want to grow, and that is exactly where we stumble. This is not a sign of weakness, but an expression of our striving. Counselling is therefore not about "fixing" people, but about helping them find clarity about their own why — so they can continue their path with more direction and conviction.

Evidence-based

I work in a psychologically grounded way, based on scientifically tested models and methods. No simplistic motivational talk, no quick-fix solutions.

Ethically anchored

My work is guided by ethical principles — respect, responsibility, and integrity. I support people not out of trend, but out of conviction.

It is a privilege to be invited into the inner worlds of other people. A privilege to pass on what I have learned and to discover together how change becomes possible.

People remain, for me, the most interesting and complex phenomenon there is. That is why I work as a psychological counsellor today: to offer people the best possible support I can — clear, human, evidence-based, and with genuine respect for what matters to them.
